Oxytocin Supplementation for Men

Oxytocin is a peptide hormone implicated in many biological functions. In particular, it has been associated with sexual functioning and social bonding. Sometimes referred to as the “love hormone,” it plays an important role in various bodily functions. Oxytocin is important for both men and women, and most research has focused on its importance in socialization. It is often characterized as primarily important for women during pregnancy and breastfeeding as it regulates lactation. Recent research, however, has shown that using oxytocin supplementation in men can improve sexual functioning.

Research on Oxytocin in Men

Much of the publicized research on the effects of oxytocin on men has been in regard to its effects on social bonding, particularly in monogamous relationships. It has often been described as the “biological mechanism behind monogamy.” It has been shown to affect how men perceive potential mates depending on whether they are in a relationship or single. For example, for men in a committed relationship, the administration of oxytocin enhances the effects of the bond by making men more strongly reject other potential mates.

However, oxytocin is still being researched, and all of its effects as a potential drug are not yet clear. It is understood that besides its effects on social bonding, oxytocin has important effects on sexual response in men. The effects of oxytocin administered in men for improving sexual performance include decreased latency to orgasmic release, increased pleasurable sensations, increased sexual responsiveness, and more.

Oxytocin for Sexual Health in Men

In a study that included 26 participants who had used oxytocin to improve sexual performance, 100% of the respondents said they would recommend the product to their friends. A significantly high 86% noted increased overall pleasure and sexual satisfaction. In addition, there were no adverse effects reported by any of the respondents. Some positive feedback included longer lasting before orgasmic release, increased nipple sensation, improved control with premature ejaculation, and improved feelings during climax. The researchers noted that this was a small group and that larger controlled clinical trials are required to confirm the findings.

Oxytocin and Prostate Health

Oxytocin has been found to be produced locally in the reproductive glands of both men and women. Oxytocin and its receptor have been found in the prostate. In cases of benign or malignant prostate disease, altered levels of oxytocin are found. This means that the hormone may be implicated in the pathophysiology of these diseases. There is no protocol yet that suggests oxytocin could be used to reduce the risk of these diseases. However, it is an interesting connection that links oxytocin directly with the reproductive glands.
