Natural Desiccated Thyroid (NDT)

Description: Natural desiccated thyroid is made from the dried and desiccated glands of pigs. It contains both T3 and T3 as well as thyroid co-factors. Compounded NDT contains the active ingredient Thyroid USP, which means that the desiccated thyroid is prepared according to a specific USP standard of quality and potency.
Hypothyroidism is a common problem that requires lifelong treatment. Often patients are prescribed synthetic thyroid (levothyroxine) to treat this condition. However some patients do not improve using only T4 with synthetic treatment. Some patients have found that desiccated thyroid improves their symptoms more than the typical synthetic forms of the drug.
NDT was the first treatment available for hypothyroidism and was available for many years before synthetic forms of the hormone. There are commercially available versions of NDT available, however many brands have experienced shortages and recalls in recent years.
