Low Dose Naltrexone (LDN)

Formulation: Naltrexone 1.5mg, 3mg, or 4.mg capsules

Treatment for chronic pain and other conditions.

Description: Naltrexone is a competitive antagonist of opioid receptors that is typically used for treating opioid addiction and alcoholism. In lower dosages it has been shown to have unique effects and potential in treating various chronic conditions like fibromyalgia, Crohn’s disease, rheumatoid arthritis, and more.

They FDA approved dosage of naltrexone is 50mg. For treating chronic conditions however, the dosage used is typically in the 1.5mg to 4.5mg range. At this dosage, naltrexone exhibits what are referred to as “pardoxical” effects by actually acting to treat chronic pain without the use of opioids.

The side effects of LDN tend to be rare – the most common one being insomnia which may be reduced by adjusting the dosing schedule. Because the only commercially available dosage is 50mg, the lower dosages of naltrexone must be made by a compounding pharmacy.

Why is LDN Prescribed?

The list of conditions for which LDN is prescribed continues to grow. This list is not exhaustive, but includes many well researched uses for LDN. Note that naltrexone is currently only approved by the FDA for opioid and alcohol dependence. The use of naltrexone at low doses for treating other conditions is considered off-label.
