Description:
Ketotifen is a medication that is prescribed for managing asthma (not acute attacks but for management over time), food allergies, atopic dermatitis, and more. It is also used for managing mast cell activation syndrome (MCAS).
In Canada, Europe, and Mexico, oral forms of ketotifen are commercially available in manufactured form. In the U.S., oral forms of ketotifen must be made by a compounding pharmacy.
Mast cells are responsible for immediate allergic reactions by releasing mediators that are stored inside or made by them. MCAS is a condition in which a patient frequently experiences symptoms of an allergic reaction when high levels of mast cell mediators are released. This reaction is not caused by any known allergic antibody and the cause of MCAS is unknown.
Episodes of MCAS generally are treated in the same manner as allergic reactions. Antihistamines are often used for managing common symptoms like itching, flushing, and abdominal discomfort.
