Chloramphenicol 46.7%, Sulfamethoxazole 46.7%, Amphotericin 5.6% (can add hydrocortisone)

Dry powder treatment for treating ear infections.

Description

CSF otic powder contains chloramphenicol, sulfamethoxazole, and amphotericin. Hydrocortisone can also be added to this formulation. This combination of antibiotics and an antifungal is used to treat chronic otitis media and otitis externa.

How Does Otic Powder Work?

In one study, 86% of patients with acute external otitis (AEO) treated with auricularum powder were cured at day 3-4 after initial treatment. While the formulation used in this study is not the same as CSF powder, the principle of using antibiotic powder to treat ear infections has been well established.

A benefit of a topical medication for treating infection is that it limits systemic effects. Taking a medication orally can lead to effects throughout the body including gastrointestinal side effects. Topical application directly to the air helps deliver medication where it is needed and prevent it from spreading to where it is not needed. Systemic delivery of antibiotics contributes to antibiotic resistance and can sometimes create an environment for otherwise harmless bacteria to overgrow and become an infection.

Topical powders for treating ear infections can be used in higher concentrations than when given systemically, improving the ability of the antibiotic to treat the infection.
