Minoxidil and Spironolactone Capsules
Formulations:
Minoxidil 0.25mg, Spironolactone 25mg Capsules
Description
This combination helps reduce hair loss in women. Hair loss can affect women of any age, but its prevalence increases once women reach menopause. The effects on self-esteem can be severe, and many women seek treatments that can slow hair loss or promote hair growth.
Research
A study was conducted with 100 women with a mean hair loss severity of Sinclair 2.79 and a mean hair shedding score of 4.82. The duration that these women had been suffering from hair loss was a mean of 6.5 years. At 6 months, the mean reduction in hair loss severity score was 0.85 and 1.3 at 12 months. This shows that the results progressively improve the longer the medication is used.
In this trial, capsules with 0.25mg minoxidil and 25mg spironolactone were compounded. The patients were instructed to take one capsule daily. Few adverse effects were reported. Only two women discontinued treatment due to itchiness that developed.
Ingredients
Minoxidil is a well-known drug found in the popular hair loss medication Rogaine. It is used for treating patients with severe hypertension and is a commonly used topical for hair loss. Minoxidil may also help with hair loss when taken orally in small dosages.
Spironolactone has a number of medical uses. Due to its antiandrogenic activity, it can be used to treat hair loss in women. High doses of spironolactone have been shown to have feminizing effects in men. Androgens play an important role in certain types of hair loss. Spironolactone slows down the production of androgens that are responsible for hair loss.
Androgenic Alopecia
The most common type of hair loss in both men and women is androgenic alopecia. Hair follicles contain androgen receptors, so hair growth is affected by the presence of androgens. Women with androgenic alopecia do not necessarily have more circulating androgens, however. Instead, they have been found to have higher levels of 5α-reductase, more androgen receptors, and lower levels of cytochrome P450. These factors all result in changes to how hormones are converted to other hormones and cause a shortening of the anagen phase of hair growth.
