Diazepam Suppositories
Formulation: Diazepam 2mg, 5mg, or 10mg vaginal suppositories.
Description: Diazepam vaginal suppositories can be compounded for treating chronic pelvic pain. It may be used intermittently as a treatment before sexual activity or before physical therapy. Various types of physical therapy that may be recommended for pelvic pain include yoga and stretching.
Vaginal administration of diazepam results in a lower peak serum plasma concentration than oral use. This may help reduce systemic side effects of the drug. Intermittent use with breaks in between is still recommended for most patients to prevent accumulation from daily use.
In a study of 26 patients, 25 reported an improvement in their symptoms with the use of the suppositories. Out of seven sexually active patients in the study, six were able to resume intercourse. The researchers concluded that the suppositories produced a clinically significant result that was superior to the usual regimen used alone.
