Description:
Cromolyn is a mast cell stabilizer used for managing conditions like mastocytosis.
Cromolyn is commercially available in the U.S. in the form of an oral solution for treating mastocytosis in patients older than 2 years of age. It can reduce symptoms like headaches, flushing, urticaria, abdominal pain, nausea, and more. It is also made in a nasal spray and as an ophthalmic solution. Off-label uses include treating food allergies and managing inflammatory bowel disease.
The bioavailability of orally administered cromolyn is low however with regular use it can be effective. Because of its low bioavailability it can not be used as an acute treatment. Instead it is used on a daily basis to prevent the release of inflammatory mediators over time. In general patients report an improvement in symptoms within 2 to 6 weeks.
