Terra Cortril for Dry Socket

Terra Cortril was a brand name medication that was discontinued in the U.S. but has been used for treating dry socket. The original formulation contained oxytetracycline 1% with hydrocortisone 0.5%. In the first studies that were conducted that demonstrated a significant benefit in preventing dry socket, Terra Cortril solution or ointment was re-purposed. There were some side effects in these studies associated with the base of the product as it was not designed for treating dry socket. Our formulation has been customized specifically for treating dry socket with a clove oil base.

Terra Cortril for Dry Socket – Ingredients

The name Terra Cortril was derived from the two main ingredients – terramycin (oxytetracycline) and hydrocortril (hydrocortisone). We have also included a unique base for our formulation.

Tetracycline – Topical tetracycline has been shown to significantly reduce the occurrence of dry socket. Studies have shown that it can be effective when placed immediately after extraction. Tetracycline reduces bacterial numbers, which prevents fibrinolysis.

Hydrocortisone – Hydrocortisone can reduce swelling to improve postoperative recovery.

Clove oil – Clove oil (eugenol) has been used for many years as a dry socket prevention and was a part of the popular product Alvogyl. Clove oil has been shown to outperform chlorhexidine in the prevention of dry socket.

Prevention and Treatment of Dry Socket

As most dentists know, prevention of dry socket is preferable to treatment. The amount of surgical trauma, the presence of other diseases, smoking, and the use of oral contraceptives can all contribute to an increased risk of dry socket. There are many ways that the risk of a patient developing dry socket can be minimized. However having an effective treatment option readily available if patients need it is essential for maintaining good procedure outcomes.
