Chlorhexidine is a broad-spectrum anti-bacterial that can be used orally to treat gingivitis.
Description: Gingivitis is a bacteria that forms on the plaque of teeth between brushing. The application of chlorhexidine gel and prevent the development of gingivitis by killing this bacteria. Proper consultation with a dentist is required for using this medication as allergic reactions and side effects are possible.
Chlorhexidine has been shown to enhance the effects of scaling and root planing. The typical deep cleaning does effectively remove bacterial load from the tooth surface but does not remove all bacteria from pockets. Anti-bacterial gels are sometimes used as an adjunct treatment to scaling and root planing to improve results.
In various formulations, chlorhexidine can kill bacteria, fungi, and some viruses.
